THE 98 ORIGIN

98 was founded in 2010 with a clear belief: training should build more than fitness.

In an industry often driven by trends, shortcuts and aesthetics, 98 has remained committed to hard work, expert coaching and proven strength and conditioning programming. Our purpose is to build performance that stands the test of time and help people discover what they are capable of through consistent, purposeful work.

Today, 98 is a respected national training brand, built deliberately around quality rather than quantity.

THE 98 PHILOSOPHY

98 is not another group fitness gym.

Our programming is progressive, purposeful and designed to produce measurable improvements in strength, power, endurance and overall physical capacity. Every session forms part of a broader training plan.

Our coaches bring that programming to life.

They understand the intended training stimulus, coach movement with precision and create an environment where every member can work hard, improve and feel part of the team.

We value effort over ego, consistency over shortcuts and collective success over individual recognition.

WHO WE ARE

98 Canberra is a strength and conditioning gym built around high-quality coaching, proven programming and a strong, connected community.

Our members come from different backgrounds and ability levels, but they share a willingness to train with purpose and contribute to the people around them. Some are experienced athletes. Others are learning to train properly for the first time.

Our responsibility is to coach every person in the room without compromising the standard.

We are building a team that cares about the details, takes ownership and genuinely wants to help 98 Canberra win. That means delivering exceptional sessions, supporting our members, strengthening our culture and contributing to the success of the wider business.

THE ROLE

We are looking for an experienced strength and conditioning coach who wants more than a few hours on a roster.

This role is for someone who takes pride in their craft, follows through on commitments and wants to become an important part of the 98 Canberra team.

You will deliver 98 programming to a consistently high standard across group strength and conditioning sessions. You will be expected to understand the purpose of the program, communicate it clearly and adapt movements appropriately while preserving the intended stimulus.

You will also help create the environment our members return for: professional, welcoming, challenging and team focused.

Regular early-morning and weekend availability is an essential part of the role.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Coaching Delivery

  • Prepare for and deliver 98 strength and conditioning sessions to a high standard.

  • Clearly communicate the purpose, structure and intended stimulus of each session.

  • Coach movement effectively, provide meaningful feedback and maintain strong oversight of the room.

  • Scale and adapt training appropriately for different abilities without losing the intent of the program.

  • Create sessions that are organised, engaging, safe and professionally delivered.

Member Experience

  • Learn members’ names, goals, training histories and individual needs.

  • Make new members and trialists feel welcomed, supported and confident.

  • Build genuine relationships while maintaining professional coaching standards.

  • Recognise when members need encouragement, correction, progression or additional support.

  • Help create an environment where people want to train consistently and remain part of the community.

Culture and Team

  • Represent the 98 brand, standards and values in every interaction.

  • Work collaboratively with the coaching and management team.

  • Communicate clearly, raise issues early and follow through on agreed responsibilities.

  • Contribute to events, team training and community initiatives.

  • Help maintain a professional, organised and high-performing training environment.

  • Put the team and member experience ahead of personal ego.

Reliability and Standards

  • Arrive prepared, organised and ready to coach.

  • Commit reliably to agreed early-morning and weekend shifts.

  • Maintain appropriate qualifications, professional conduct and presentation.

  • Take ownership of the quality of every session you deliver.

  • Be open to feedback and committed to continually improving your craft.

ABOUT YOU

You see coaching as a profession, not simply a side job.

You have demonstrated experience in strength and conditioning and understand how to coach compound lifts, conditioning work and mixed-ability groups with confidence.

You are reliable, attentive and comfortable holding a high standard. You communicate well, build rapport naturally and can command a room without making the session about yourself.

You want to work within an established methodology while continuing to learn and develop. Most importantly, you care about the success of the members, your teammates and the gym as a whole.

YOUR EXPERIENCE

The successful applicant will have:

  • Demonstrated strength and conditioning coaching experience.

  • At least two years of experience coaching in a group environment, preferred.

  • Certificate IV in Fitness or a relevant strength and conditioning, exercise science or allied health qualification.

  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.

  • Strong technical knowledge and the ability to explain movements clearly.

  • A demonstrated understanding of the 98 brand, methodology and training culture, or a genuine commitment to learning it.

  • Availability for regular early-morning and weekend coaching.

Experience with personal training, athletic development, weightlifting or working within a structured strength and conditioning program will be highly regarded.
